Okay, I feel as if I have hit a rut in life. I get up every day, go to work, talk to the same people every day (although, don't get me wrong, the people I see every day are great), go to the gym, come home and crash, sleep and start over the very next day. How do you stop it?! I need to have something interesting and spontaneous happen so that I feel like I am a human being again, you know? Any suggestions would be helpful, but here are a few things I have thought of that might help me and any others of you who are in a similar situation:
1. every night, pick someone new from the phone book to call and pretend that you are a long lost relative
2. drive a different route than usual to and from work
3. join a book club
4. go for an evening bike ride
5. go dancing
um...I am running out of ideas, any other suggestions that are better than these (which wouldn't be hard) are appreciated

Quitting you job and moving to a new state tends to spice things up a bit... ;) You could come to Kansas and hang with Adam and me.

But in all seriousness, I can understand your dilemma. Here are my suggestions:

1. Get a group of friends together and plan a trip - something bigger than a road trip. Honestly, you can do New York or a cruise pretty cheap. It'll give you something to look forward to while you plan and save, and give you a new life experience. Those kinds trips are some of the best memories I have from when I was single.

2. Do something besides going to the gym. My friend (and yours), Ali, does tap dancing. I did taekwondo. Learning a skill while getting in shape is killing two birds with one stone. Not to mention that I happened to meet a special someone while I was there...

3. Keep thinking about grad school. It was another great experience for me. If nothing else, study to take the GRE (that's probably the test you'd have to take). It's good for 5 years (I think), and it might get you started on making the next move in your career. However, I know you're taking piano lessons again... Hmmm.... I know there are only so many hours in the day.

I should have just sent this in an email, but anyway, let me know what you think and what you decide to do to add some zing!

Hey Kathleen! Well I sometimes feel like this, too! Although there may be various reasons, one reason that I have discovered is that I miss being in school! Especially this time of year when everyone is going back to school and I'm not, I feel like I'm in a rut, too. One thing you could maybe do is take some type of class, even an online one - that's what I decided to do. There are a ton of free classes on the BYU Independent Study website, and a lot more that are only like $30 that are "personal enrichment" courses - they look really fun!

Anyway, good luck! Hope you're doing well!

I say move out! Then you would be forced to meet some new people and experience some new things. You could move out here to Sacramento and go to school at Sacramento State...that would certainly spice things up. Thing about all the fun things you and I could do together!

Kathleen I hate to say this but I agree with Jared and Amber, moving out is awesome. Having a roommate, definitely makes things more interesting, and I don't mean that in a bad way. But if you find someone close to your age then you can both relate to the drag of daily life schedules, and then come up with something fun to do...even at like 2am.

But if you don't choose to do that, I would suggest picking up a hobby. Scrapbooking is a great one, I hear...

But I definitely hear ya, life can get you in a rut sometimes. KC and I have started to take drives in areas we don't know, so that we can get out of the house. That is fun. Maybe stick on some great music and go chill up in mountains. Enjoy them while you have them...

..or you, Krysta, and I should have an IM chat. We haven't done that in a while.

Move to Korea, not Kansas, not Sacremento... Korea. In case that wasn't subtle enough, there is a subliminal message in that too. It says spice everyone's life up and get out of the country. Seriously, if you could handle being a way from everyone you know for a year, teaching abroad is a great way to travel, save money, and get out of that rut. China offers some 6 month programs (but doesn't pay very well and I don't really trust the quality of life there). I am actually somewhat serious, the only reason it's somewhat and not completely, is I don't know how you would handle living abroad. Travelling abroad is one thing; living is something else. We should chat sometime though. I'll be online Friday and Saturday night this week... you should stop in and say hi.

So, if you are serious about the book club idea, I think I'm going to start one online like we did with the writing club for a while. Of course, I will be requiring participation from more people than just myself this time...
